Ring the Gong!

March 28, 2008
Superstar Japanese rock act JAM Project is the first announced musical guest for Otakon 2008, making their US debut performance as part of Otakon’s fifteenth consecutive annual event.

…I’m a bit disappointed…I haven’t even heard of this band outside of requests here. Doesn’t seem like that big of an act to me, but…I was also thinking of artists like Gackt or Hamasaki Ayumi or BUCK-TICK. Maybe it’s just because I don’t listen to J-pop as much as I used to. Well, hopefully other guests are going to be more to my interests.

…..SLAP!

FRIDAY ACE: “Violence Against Color” Edition - Week of 3/23/08

March 28, 2008

I was going to post this last week before I got sick. Anyways, Kazuo Umezu, famous horror manga-ka, had his dream house finally completed last week.

I love the people that are trying to complain about it. Favorite complaint is the one that this week’s edition is named after;

“It’s a violence against color…a violence against style…”

If I were him, I’d be taking that as the compliment to end all compliments. Umezu’s such an awesome guy that I bet he’s thought that already. See for yourself if you don’t believe me.

And now, this week’s Friday ACE.

FRIDAY (GOLD RUSH)

March 21, 2008

Sorry guys, no Friday ACE this week. I’ve come down with a nasty head cold -_-

To atone for this, here’s the new P-Man episode that was recently uploaded to YouTube.

Is That What The Kids Call It Now?

March 20, 2008

And now…for something off topic.

(It is nine o’ clock at night. MIKE and KARA are bombarding each other with random Youtube Clips when the subject of this week’s Torchwood comes up).

KARA: But … Torchwood is GOOD this season. Don’t know how or why, but it is.

MIKE: That’s what I’ve been saying. It’s like somebody remembered about something called “Plot” and swapped it out with the sex. That’s like…totally unheard of!

KARA: P….. lotttt?

MIKE: It’s this new thing they’re trying out. [It's] supposed to actually move the story along instead of everybody looking pretty and making out.

(PAUSE)

KARA: … I don’t know if the world is ready for this.

MIKE: They’re actually trying to ban it. (Beat) Actually when I say “They”, I really mean fangirls. And when I mean “Trying”, I mean going to petition.com…

(The two chuckle and turn on the new episode of Torchwood. FADE TO BLACK.)

I figured I’d put this up in the meantime as I get back into the daily grind back in Milwaukee. Here’s some footage of the ACEN Supra (complete with R5 Central Logo) on the streets of Schaumburg, IL.

I sense a potential R5 The Live segment come time for ACen :P

Perhaps you’re wondering about the new tab?

On the advice of a friend of a friend, I figured I’d make a mini-site for my VA work whilest I gear up for a possible resume site. That way I can get the new demo done, double check on all the roles I’ve done in the past to get it all ship-shape, and all that fun stuff.

Feel free to check it out in the meantime though :P

21 Initiative Roll Salute

March 14, 2008

I can’t believe I almost let this slip past.

When I was younger, Gen Con was always a summer tradition. The last one OF the summer in fact because the week afterwards, school would always start. I didn’t start going on my own until I was 13 due to my parent’s schedules and that was the year that Model Zone ran a contest for handing out fliers.

The way it worked was that the person that had the most amount of people come to the store using the fliers with their color won a gift certificate. Not exactly the easiest of tasks due to the face that fliers at cons have the tendency to be torn down or in the case of Gen Con that year, thrown out en masse. Two friends of mine managed to win it in the end but I’m jumping ahead of myself.

I had struck up a working relationship with the owner of Cool Stuff Videos at the time and helped him out a bit that year aside from my brief sickness that sent me home early on Saturday afternoon and had thus gotten a Dealer’s Pass. Had to turn it in when the con was closing on Sunday and due to the fact that I hadn’t gotten a single person to take one of my fliers, I figured I’d take my friend’s route and pass them off to the people leaving while shouting out an advertising pitch.

I had gotten through a bunch of people before Security had stopped me, telling me to surrender the remaining fliers. I protested a bit, saying that there are other people right now doing the exact same thing (which they really were, I wasn’t trying to use High School Defensive Excuse #14). She then said flat out to give her the rest of the fliers or else I would be arrested. I sighed and handed her my stack which she then walked away with. I had some left in my backpack to give out but I knew I didn’t have a chance.

Pissed and defeated, I called my dad using my phone card (because back then not everybody had a cell phone…God I feel so old now) and waited outside amidst the crowds and traffic slowed down in the streets. While standing there, an older man in shorts was talking to a bunch of other guys about how the convention was being run this year. I had jumped in and told of my story about the fliers of course and got involved. I don’t remember the specifics of this conversation but I remember that in the end, I had gotten into a bit of small talk with the older man who I just thought was a really nice guy.

That is until a kid comes running up with a box of Dungeons and Dragons Clue and it hits me. The whole time, I had been talking to Gary Gygax.

Right away, I turned red and got starstruck and knowing that I’m running out of time, I ask if he can sign my big convention backpack that would later serve as my alternative to a locker during my Freshman year in high school (back in the days where we weren’t so paranoid about bringing guns to school ).  Gary says “Sure!” and just as he starts to sign, my Dad pulls up and yells for me to get in the car.  Gary then looked over and yelled back with a smile, saying I’ll be right with him as he finished signing the backpack. I thanked him and waved goodbye as I ran to my Dad’s now long gone Buick Le Sabre, gushing and telling him that “OMG! I JUST MET GARY GYGAX!!!” as we drove home that Sunday afternoon.

My Dad got to meet him once at the con and got him to sign a mousepad for this new game he had been working on. I still use that mousepad to this day for my PC, even with the wear and tear. And, yes, I still own that backpack. The signature is still there, faded with the times but the Sharpie marks of one of the kindest men I’ve ever met still remain.

Even though it was for a few minutes, I’m still going to miss you Gary. Take it easy up there.

FRIDAY ACE: “Sun and Columbus Edition” - Week of 3/9/08

March 14, 2008

As I type this, I’m visiting a friend of mine in Columbus, OH where things are surprisingly warmer than the unstable artic tundra that is Milwaukee. The shot above is from this kickass local sushi bar nearby that was so good, I’ve made it a tradition to go there at least once whenever I’m out here. However, just because I’m stuffing my face with sushi (Salmon FTW) doesn’t mean I’m going to keep on shirking off Friday ACE. It’s short again but the content should indeed make up for it.

Omae no karada Kyojin ni Kaeru!

March 10, 2008

You guys remember awhile back I posted the opening for SFX Giant Legend Line?

I haven’t been able to find anymore episodes of the series and I’ve been interested into seeing more of it as the concept is pretty sweet even though the special effects may not be up to par. Why do I mention this now?

Because I just got a thank you note via YouTube from the Director and Scenario writer, Shoryu Yamada!

It is a Yamada Syoryo of a supervisor and a scenario.
It thanks for the time being.
Thank you for upload a work.

I know the English isn’t the best but I looked up the staff info on Wikipedia just to be sure and sure enough, he’s the real deal. Question is…Do I invite him onto R5 Central for an interview? :p

Thanks to his favorites list though, I came across these guys. The Komadori Brothers.

This account holds the many 8mm films these guys made during the early 80’s in their high school years. My personal favorite aside from the above Barbie wa Cat’s Eye is their take on 8-Man.

Classic. I’d pay for a DVD of all their stuff if it was available. For the time being, I’m glad it’s all for free on Youtube ^^;

FRIDAY ACE: “Deep In The Trenches” Edition - Week of 3/3/08

March 7, 2008
ep50-abanner.jpg

That’s right, R5 Central is now at the 50 episode mark…even though we’ve had like 100 things on the feed. Because of this, I haven’t been able to do much with Friday ACE. This week, due to the fact that Keith wants to have Ep 50a headline the HJU blog, this short but sweet edition Friday ACE is a J-ACE exclusive. Go you, faithful reader :P
