There’s a chance I may not be able to get to do Friday ACE this week due to work on Otaku USA and R5 Central. In its absence, I leave you the trailer for what may be the greatest clash in cinema history…

YUREI TAI UCHUUUUUUUUJIN-I mean GHOSTS VS ALIENS!!!

NO BORDER!

April 21, 2008

So you guys have no doubt heard the news about Super Robot Taisen Z…

It’s been three years since we’ve had a proper game and fans are hoping that this will indeed be worth the wait. To answer some of the more burning questions, a series of interviews were conducted with Chief Producer Terada. These were recently translated by the individual known as Silversonic and posted on 4chan’s mecha board. For your convenience, I’ve posted them here :P

Check ‘em out behind the jump.

FRIDAY ACE: “Dash Seven” Edition - Week of 4/13/08

April 18, 2008

This week was slightly depressing for hardcore tokusatsu fans due to yet another tragic loss. Kouhan Kawauchi, screenwriter for Seijin Suzuki’s Tokyo Drifter and creator of such awesome shows like Rainbowman, Condorman, and Diamond Eye passed away this week. I know we can’t expect these guys to last forever but it’s always saddening to hear about them.

Once again, it falls upon me to do some sort of tribute to the man. Luckily somebody beat me to it. Now, one of the girls from THE iDOLM@STER doing a rendition of the Shine Shine Dan theme from Rainbowman.

And now, this week’s Friday ACE.

With Apologies For Chiharu…

April 13, 2008

Kamen Rider Kiva (right) pictured with Den-O (left), showing off his charming side by sweeping Nana Akiyama off her feet. You sly half-Fangire you…

Anywho, Igadevil has posted up his reviews for Kamen Rider Den-O and Kiva: Climax Deka. Go over to his site and check out both the Spoiler-Free and Spoiler-Full reviews.

When was the last time a Rider movie featured Riders from two separate series in the same movie? When was the last time a Rider film wasn’t just a vehicle for the writer’s self-indulgent pop star revenge fantasy/ horror movie rip-off that unashamedly sidelines the characters we paid to go see? Wait, don’t answer that last one.

From the descriptions, I’m really looking forward to catching this one on DVD when it comes out…whenever it does.

FRIDAY ACE: “Many Happy Returns” Edition - Week of 04/06/08

April 11, 2008

With all the new shows coming on and my friend having left me his import PS2 along with his copy of ACE 3 The Final, I’ve been in the middle of a media overload. Macross Frontier, new Geass, Keitai Sousakan 7…Brand New Doctor Who…it’s all too much. But then, while recovering, I found out the following news via Scifi Japan and my week has suddenly become legendary: Space Magazine Uchusen is coming back!!

Released on April 1, 2008, the new Uchusen Magazine is a quarterly publication in a similar format as its predecessor. The first issue will continue the numbering of the original and begin with issue number 120. The 132-page periodical will go for 1,800 yen and the first issue includes a supplemental 42-page 2008 Yearbook insert.

In an attempt to recapture the spirit of Uchusen, Hobby Japan brings back three of the original staffers, Shinohara Mamoru, Keita Amemiya and Kobayashi. The magazine will contain all the requisite film and television coverage, but will also return to serializations and incorporate a fan club, which will promote fan-involvement in the magazine’s content.

And the best bit about this: If I’m reading this right, Keita Amemiya has some details about possible new Garo stuff in his column. Getting a copy…now. In the meantime, this week’s Friday ACE.

“We say nothing about it and hope they sleep through the movie”

April 10, 2008

German director Uwe Boll says he will quit making films if a petition demanding him to stop gets 1 million signatures.

Boll’s work includes House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne II: Deliverance, all of which rank in the bottom 100 of the Internet Movie Database website.

In an interview with FEARnet, the director admitted he knew about a petition, which currently has 18,000 signatures, requesting he stop making films.

“Yeah, I know [about the petition]. 18,000 is not enough to convince me,” Boll said.

When asked about how many signatures would be needed, the director replied: “One million. Now we have a new goal.”

Okay folks, you know now what you must do. Go here and sign sign sign!

“What if [Uwe Boll] stops making movies, and starts making games?”

“That’s why God, in His infinite wisdom, created sniper rifles.”

Wall to Wall Cleavage

April 8, 2008

At first, I was kinda miffed that for some reason, people in the states got the No BGM version of this teaser for Blasreitter. Now I’m thinking that’s all you need to see.

*Sigh* Okay, looks like I have to make another retraction. (And a bit of a rant while I’m at it so be warned). Remember how I recommended you go into BOST TV to try and get the better end of the bargain for Gonzo’s “New Deal”?

Don’t.

You do have to pay but the selection is complete garbage. It’s Keitai Shoujo, some other fanservice/harem crap, and then Blassreitter and Tower of Druaga. Both of which were NOT worthy of being elevated to the “freebie status” that they were recently granted . It’s tragic too, these two flagship shows turned me off in their first episodes with really weak plots and the trademark ghastly fusion of 2D/3D Animation. I do have to give Blassreitter props for not looking like Transformers Galaxy Force all over again but it might as well be its successor in terms of crap. And yeah, I know that’s a bit of a harsh thing to say after one episode but come on. I wasn’t even moved to watch the rest of the series in both instances.

No this isn’t going to be a-Hey! Stop right there! Don’t even bother trying to go back to Crunchyroll. Both Blassreitter and Tower of Druaga are both up there…but in HORRIBLE quality at the highest quality setting. Oh but of course all the fanservice titles that are just throwaways are available in the highest quality with downloads in H.264. What the hell?

Now before you pounce on me with logic, I know this is what some people have been waiting for; a company that finally “gets it” and is trying to work with the internet to provide content. The sad truth of the matter though is that the content isn’t worth it. It’s like I told a friend of mine tonight, right now it seems like the only things Gonzo has going for them nowadays are Breasts and CG. And Breasts rendered in CG. Oh and Afro Samurai. That’s their only saving grace in my book.

All I’m saying is that I really won’t be satisfied with the way the industry is going until the product being offered in the new medium is actually worth my time and money. In other words, I want my streaming episodes of Captain Harlock damnit.

FRIDAY ACE: “Forgot to Prank” Edition - Week of 03/30/08

April 4, 2008

So I completely forgot that April Fool’s was this week and I’m slightly miffed because I hadn’t thought of anything to do for the occasion. Closest thing was the promo I cooked up for Rangercast but even that didn’t have the impact of say the prank I pulled two years ago with R5.

Ah well…Maybe next year I’ll get everybody good. But at least a lot of fun stuff happened this week that made up for it. The majority of it that I liked is in this installment of Friday ACE….
