Not so fun, being twisted….
Most of you guys probably don’t know this but there’s a possibility I may living in Japan for a year, to try it out before I go to college out there. Among the list of goals I had in mind, one was to make a trailer for the Akiba Maid Cafe Massacre short that I made last year for R5 Central’s Halloween episode.
I even came up with a rough outline of the story and everything, every person I told the story to thought it was twisted and potentially awesome. Now here we are at Monday and suddenly, the idea isn’t as fun anymore. Namely because there WAS an actual Akihabara massacre yesterday.
From Japan Probe:
A man went on a stabbing spree on Sunday in central Tokyo, injuring at least 14 people with about five of them left unconscious, a fire department official said.
The man was subdued after stabbing bystanders near the bustling train station of Akihabara, an area known for electronics stores and is a haven for fans of video-games and comic-book culture.
At least 14 people including a police officer were injured, the fire department official said.
“About five of them are unconscious,” he said.
The man was driving a truck that swerved into pedestrians before he got out and began stabbing people at random, according to media reports.
I don’t think I could say anything that hasn’t already been said at this point. It’s really chilling when you learn more about it too, especially with the fact that he was posting on a BBS in the time leading up it..
This really sucks, for both the families and friends of the victims and Akiba itself. The latter because from what I’ve been hearing, the police have really been cracking down on street performers and the like. What makes this worse is the fact that the media are DRAMATICALLY playing up the fact that he liked anime/manga/video games….
The question remains now; Will the government decide to totally crack down on Akihabara and if so, where will the otaku flock to now?
The really messed up bit though: The people laughing during the news coverage…

Yep, there were apparently multiple people making faces and such during the coverage as if it was their chance to get on TV. It’s rather shameless and really a stupid thing to do following the aftermath of a tragedy like this. Looks like I’m not alone in thinking this though because as I type, angry users on 2channel are trying to uncover the identities of the people in question….
I’m actually cheering 2ch on. As I told a friend of mine, it’s like somebody trying to moon through the window of the newsroom during the 9/11 coverage–As cool as you think you are, you’re just making yourself look like a shameless moron. Sure they may not have known but that’s just ridiculous regardless.
That’s…pretty much all I have to say. I had to fight off the elements this weekend to prevent my basement from being flooded alongside my dad. Now I find myself unable to say how bad of a time it was when stuff like this was going down.
Take it easy folks. Be safe.
