We’re Off to Outer Space…..
The promotional reel for Yoshinobu Nishizaki’s long-awaited Space Battleship Yamato project, Yamato: Revival Chapter has emerged and taken the fandom by storm. Instead of doing a full-blown write up, I’ll just give some quick thoughts:
New Character Designs: A bold step in the right direction? Or is Nishizaki just giving Leiji Matsumoto the finger one last time? Really, it feels like the latter but I’m not 100% impressed.
CG Warfare: Right now, the fanboy in me is freaking out after seeing a sleeker-looking Yamato emerge from its frozen grave but the question is will the effects manage to hold up, even with a theatrical budget? Maybe it was because this was more of a promo reel than an actual trailer that I got somewhat bored after awhile. Yes, I know we got brand-spanking new Cosmo Tigers and a ton of new Earth Federation flagships but I just hope we have a strong-enough story to compliment them.
And lastly, I hope to god we can get something on par with the beautiful musical arrangements of movies/TV series past. My eyes lit up the second I heard that prelude–If we can have moments like that where the action and the score mix together to take my breath away, I’ll be sure to enjoy this.
Nishizaki said in an interview that he hopes to surpass the likes of Miyazaki with Revival Chapter. I’ve no clue if the man can actually do it but I want to believe he can swing it. No word on when it’s slated to actually come out….and you can bet there’s no way in hell we’ll get this in the States unless Voyager comes through. Until then, we’ll keep peace alive and pray for the success of this new Yamato venture.
I haven’t seen any of Yamato or even Star Blazers. What I have seen of Matsumoto’s work though (different Harlock stuff, Galaxy Express 999 movie 1, Galaxy Railways, Maetel Legend), I liked. I don’t think I like the character design not keeping with Matsumoto’s traditional style or the images I’ve seen of Yamato’s characters though.
I’m intrigued to watch this movie whenever it comes out though.
By the way, neat new theme.
